is a native of Minnesota and spent his childhood on the banks of one of the state's 10,000 lakes not far from the
Mississippi River. With his family, his parents and two younger sisters, he spent many of his summers canoeing
in the Boundary Waters near the Canadian border. Canoeing and camping have been a lifelong passion.
Guy has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in Interdisciplinary Studies and a second B.A. in Computer and Information Science from the University of California in Santa Cruz. He lived in California for many years, and took every possible opportunity to enjoy the out-of-doors, camping and canoeing on that state's rivers and bays.
The idea of canoeing the entire Mississippi River came to Guy when he was in his mid-40s and visiting a friend in Europe. His friend described a trip he had taken in a houseboat on the Mississippi from Minneapolis to Saint Louis, and Guy said to himself, "I could do that in my canoe!" So the idea was born.
